Great device when complemented with the "basecamp" computer software.

I bought this to take with me off-roading. Its rugged, fits in my pocket, tracks my trips and then by cable they can be downloaded onto my computer and stored. The free download program "basecamp" available from Garmin.com gives you the capability of reviewing past trips, or planning routes for future trips on a computer and then transfer them to the eTrex. I love the way it "pings" to you if you're following a route and you know you're still on track. I wish instead it would let you know when you're off track by a certain distance. Its great...but some drawbacks: In bright sunlight the screen is nearly unreadable unless you tilt it just right or get in the shade. The joystick is great for moving the curser around on the screen, but the screen is a bit too small to use while driving off-road. The menu's are not that intuitive, but after 4 or 5 outings, I'm getting the hang of getting around with my Etrex. It is rugged, has great battery life (which the bigger units lack) and uses standard double A batteries. So far, I'm happy, its doing just what I wanted it to do.

I used to be an Obligato fan, but not since I started using Eva Gold. Breaks in fast, and has great power and clarity. Great strings.
