Impressive bit of ICE.
As most people know, factory fitted car systems in anything bar premium saloon cars are usually there to fill a gap and play CDs. Upgrading the headunit is normally the first step, followed by speakers, cables and separate amps. The market is flooded with single-din headunits and needing to replace the stock CD player in a Nissan Silvia S15, there were plenty of options open to me. The basic spec on the KDC-W3037A is quite straight-forward: CD, radio, decent claimed power, face-off but most important to me was the AUX socket. I am so used to having hundreds of songs on my iphone, that I hardly ever carry any CDs in my Impreza. A 3.5mm stereo-Jack to jack cable plugged into the Kenwood not only allowed my ipod to function as the music source, but also turned it into a hands-free system. The sound quality is much improved over the stock Nissan system, the display is very clear, mobile phone clarity is impressive through the system as well. For the money, it's a very well known car audio brand with good build-quality and good sound reproduction. If I had to mark the unit down it's the Kenwood specific connection on the back is awkward to intially connect and the AUX socket is not active unless you go into the menu system to enable it. Also, if anyone buys this for a Nissan Silvia S15 you need a Nissan Micra year 2000 ISO lead, then the kenwood connection lead! Overall, the unit looks more than it's worth, it's well built, comes from a well known car audio brand and it also plays CDs well! Buy it with confidence, it's better than OEM!

Guyver:Out of Control...
A timely re-release of a 'sci-fi classic' or quick cash-in on the success of the new Guyver: The Bio-Boosted Armour? I'm still undecided, however a new DVD cover & 20 minutes of re-inserted footage does turn a good B-Movie for fans into a great film for everyone. The transfer is the same as the MIA release in 2000 (better than VHS) and it has just Dolby Digital Stereo as the default audio, but it's still impressive for the low budget the film was shot in. The additional 20 minutes of footage mostly centre around the relationship between Sean Barker (David Hayter A.K.A Metal Gear's Solid Snake!) and Corey with a few extra kicks & throws on the standard thugs thrown in. A new nightmare scene is added in at the start too, but it all makes sense if you're an existing fan of the anime series. This is the version that should have been released first time round and is superior to the awful Mutronics film. For newcomers to the film, it follows on from the end of the manga series with Sean (Sho in Japan) trying to come to terms with an alien weapon residing inside of him & the conflicts that arise from it. His friends have all deserted him and he has a killer conglomerate company out after him trying to get hold of the guyver unit. The film is a very violent power rangers episode really, but it's great fun to watch and has some fantastic B-Movie one-liners (watch for the 'You're Fired!' line towards the end!). If you're an existing fan, then buy this. If you have the original DVD release, then still buy this. If you want a quality example of how to create a B-Movie complete with visible strings & Boom Microphones moving away from the actors, then buy this excellent film.

Powerful & easy to use smartphone. Compact too!
Having gone through about 7 phones in the last 3 years & also unlocking many makes and models, it's safe to say I like messing about with mobile phones. The P1i is a very powerful but easy to use phone. The fact that you can use the buttons to operate the phone or the touch-screen is very intuitive. I myself use a combination of both but I find that the included stylus is rarely utilised, the tip of a fingernail is all that is required. The keypad is qwerty one which uses a rocker motion; a minimum of 2 letters to 1 button. It is odd when you first use it, but soon becomes as quick as typing on a normal phone, if not more so. The hand-writing recognition software is ok, but in translating scrawl to typed letters, it is more of a flashy gimmick, often mis-translating letters and words. The camera is of Sony Cybershot quality, a 3.2m producing impressive results and having a built-in LED flash. Call quality is clear & the sound quality through the loadspeaker is exceptional; very coherent & little sibilence at mid-level volumes. The expandable M2 port is at the side of the phone making it easy to swap out cards and the MP3/Video player is simple to use. Battery life is good, much better than I expected. The build quality of the phone is also excellent. It is much more compact than it looks in pictures too, but is slightly weighty due to the superb build & of quality materials used. It's been surpassed in pretty much everyway by the Xperia, but take a look at the price differential. Overall, i'm very happy with the phone. To me, my phone is my MP3 player, camera & notepad in one unit. I can't be bothered to carry multiple items; the P1i is all i need.
