Sly is ever changing
Ah yes - Sly Stone. Just when you think he's run out of grooves comes this little number. Very good cd, a little spotty towards the end but monster grooves throughout. I'd say 8 out of 10 but I'm a little biased as a Sly Stone/ Larry Graham fan.

MIxed Bag
Well balanced but a little too slow for my liking, this is the cd where he decided to branch out and play with musicians other than Juan Nelson and the rest of the Innocent Criminals and it shows as the grooves don't quite flow as well as in the past and the riffs are a little more "conservative" or predictable. If you are looking for a rocking Ben Harper cd, this one is not it. If you want a balanced "listening" experience, with 3/4 of the songs mid-tempo and nothing too jarring, then here you go.

Harmonica Virtuoso - tell your friends about it!
I've had the opportunity to see his live band a few times and they are just amazing. On this cd the grooves are deep, there's none of the blues clichés that are rampant in some other artists, and the harmonica playing is beyond description. He makes John Popper from Blues Traveler look like an amateur. The topics for the songs are well chosen, whether it's a different take on Politicians and the art of lying, to the lack of respect we all pay to our planet, or the indifference that many countries have towards their original inhabitants ( aborigines, American Indian, etc ). Very well done. The sound has a very even mix. There was really only one song on the cd that I didn't love on the first listen. How many cds can you say that about? Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you love great Harmonica playing, insightful lyrics without being preachy, a tight band playing tight grooves, or just enjoy really good music done well.
