Very detailed description of the ship sailing ships and their operating equipment and the travails encountered on a daily basis by the ordinary seamen in their daily chores. These are aspects often overlooked when the brilliant magnitude of Cooks achievements are considered The authors experiences as an ordinary seaman in his own working life give authenticity to his descriptions of the vessels and the skills needed from the crew to carry out a long voyage lLike all admirers of Cook and his achievements Parkins respect for the enormity of his discoveries and what they meant to the known world at that time shine through. I am a keen student and admirer of Cook and have in excess of 100 books on the man and his life. Most books after the Hakylut volumes of CJBeaglehole have little new to add to the stories but Parkins volume gives a welcome new perspective Highly recommended addition to our knowledge of the Greatest Navigator and Maritime explorer the world has ever seen
