Fate is the Hunter, by Ernest K. Gann

I liked it in high school, and I like it now on the re-read, 60 years later. This time around, I got the insight that the pathetic fallacy is a literary artifact of Christianity--the experience of a pioneering pilot in aviation gives weight to a view of nature informed by benevolent or hostile forces, hence the luck of the pilot, and the fate of these who didn't survive.
