Multidimensional but not overwhelming

Gardner brings his years of experience with Bach and music in general to this book. Along the the way I am learning more about the development of music in Europe than I have ever known before. At times there are discussions of music theory that are beyond this recreational listener's reach but that's neither surprising nor inappropriate given the depth of material he covers. Any reader at any level will find new things to learn and enjoy from this work. I purchased this to help guide me through his Monteverdi Choir's boxed set of CDs; The Bach Cantata Pilgrimage.
