Great Book Equals Great Film
The Constant Gardener is a movie based upon the novel written by a leading author of the suspense/espionage genre, John LeCarr. The main character is Justin Quayle, intensely portrayed by the fine actor, Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient). He's a British diplomat living in South Africa with his beautiful wife, Tessa. Tessa, the beloved and outspoken advocate of the rights of South Africa's pooor, exposes a scheme by a leading pharmaceutical company, and the end results are disastrous. Those involved in the turn of events are who you would least expect. Under these circumstances, it's difficult to determine who is a friend, and who is a foe. Justen, our hero is determined unearth the dangerous mysteries that sent his wife to the grave, and that threaten his own life as well. To say more would reveal too much, and there's nothing I hate more than a spoiler! Often I've been disappointed after reading a novel, and viewing the film version. Sometimes, for the sake of time and creative license, the movie lacks significant details that brought the novel and characters to life. If you enjoy fast paced action, mystery and intrigue, you will definitely enjoy this movie. As an extra bonus, nothing can top the beautiful cinematography - ranging from the grim realities of the impoverished shanty towns, to the soaring beauty of the African plains.

Play That Funky Music, White Boys...
As a child of the 70s and 80s, I practically grew up on Bootsey Collins, George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic, Duran Duran, and Prince, just to name a few. Musically, it was a wild, glorious time - bass, glam, funk, and synthesizers took the musical experience to a whole new level. With their self-titled album, Under the Influence of Giants has managed to combine all the best of the two musical eras - all the groove, all the grind, the sexy bravado, and ALL THE FUNK. I bought the cd after hearing "Mama's Room", but quickly got hooked on track #3 "In The Clouds". As they say on the streets, "That's my jam!" It's an instant attitude adjustment. Every time I hear this, I want to get up, stomp, and shake it for all it's worth. And believe me, I do! There's nothing about this cd that I don't like. I'm not really a fan of "slow" songs, but the two or three that are on this cd are soulful, and didn't disrupt the flow at all, but provided a welcome break from shaking it for all it's worth. Check it out...you'll see what I'm talking about.

More hot fuss
Maybe I'm just partial to The Killers. Maybe Brandon Flowers can sing about buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks, and it would still be in heavy rotation in my cd player. I bought this cd because I was hooked on "Hot Fuss" from the very beginning. When I first listened to "Sam's Town", I must admit that I was expecting more Hot Fuss. Sam's Town is a little toned down, but the more I listened to it, the more I appreciated the deep sincerity of the albums lyrics; and Brandon's voice always delivers - it's endearing and sweet how he's not afraid to hit a note that's a little off, especially when he warbles "..before you go, can you read my mind?" on "Read My Mind", my favorite track on the album. It just makes it all the more sweeter.
