Exceptionally outstanding book revealing insight to Mexico City during the time of Porfirio Diaz
Michael Nava has taken a delicate subject and expanded on it to reveal secrets seldom explored in the past. Mr. Nava describes what Mexico City and her bureaucrats were like prior to and after the fall of Porfirio Diaz and the rise of Francisco E. Madero. Mr. Nava vividly describes the living condition between the haves and have not's. Mr. Nava also suggest that there was an underground railroad the smuggled Tarahumara Indians from the Yucatan back to their home land in Sonora, Mexico. Mr. Baca Vividly describes those who were in the government for personal and selfish reasons and those few who fought and served because they believed.
Mr. Baca presents one of the best researched and presented descriptions of Pres. Francisco E. Madero and V.P. Pino Suarez last days and assassinations.
Mr. Baca also introduces homosexuality into the life of a pre-porfirian family and in a sensative manner describes the development and what a family can do to address this issue. Extremely delicate and sensative.
This is the first book that I have read by Michael Nava and I loved it. Highly recommend.

yo tambien estuve in Vietnam
1 of 1 found this helpful This is one of the best pieces of writing that I have seen in a long time. The problem is that it was written so long ago and you can't find it for a reasonable price.
I was a surgical nurse aboard a helicopter ship with Marines who were medevaced to us after they were hit.
The stories of friendships made if only for a moment, and a silent plea of you will take care of "Doc" if I am hit, as a young marine put in extra helping of chow on my tray.
Michael has a way of saying things without trying to grouse you out or super exaggerate the situation that was already serious.
If you can find a copy I highly recommend it. We have a copy in the Chicano's and War section of the Chicano Research Center de eStockton, Calif.

San Patricios
This really is not a new CD and I found another one amongst the San Patricio books. But like anything that Ry Cooder does it is excellent. The selection of contemporary singers that were selected to participate is excellent. Lila Downs for example who is Oaxacan and Irish is a prime example. Few people know about the San Patricios and what better way to teach them than to have them learn the songs. This CD could also be used in an advance eSpanish class. It is to bad that you can't put CD players in your car anymore they have gone to Blue diente. I would study Mexican history as I drove by listening to Corridos, it also improved my listening and vocabulary of eSpanish. Loved it and recommend you buy one or dos.
