Levenger / Herman Miller Scooter with Wood Top
I own several Herman Miller Scooter desks, both the plastic-topped ones and the Levenger wood-topped one.
The advantage of the wood-topped one is width – it is 28 inches (71 cm) wide vs. 22 inches (56 cm) wide for the plastic-topped one. This added width comes in handy with using a mouse or other peripheral along with a laptop or wide keyboard.
Both models are great for use in front of a sofa, since the base slides nicely under the edge, which brings the top surface conveniently close for typing or other uses. Sliders instead of wheels give it a sled-like posture, and it's easy to move out of the way when it is not needed.
The height and tilt of the top surface is adjustable, and having multiple angles is definitely helpful. Sometimes it is nice to have the top surface flat, and angle the keyboard or laptop. This provides a nice flat surface for a beverage or other helpful item.
All in all it's a pretty essential, well-designed piece of furniture, and I have not seen anything else quite like it.
