MIM: Pono Tenor MGT All Solid Mango Setup Ukulele Uke 206
31 January 2018
Lovely Sounding, Great-Looking Base-Model Tenor Pono Uke
I adore this mango ukulele. It has a wonderful, sweet sound. It's resonate and clear and a joy to play.
Every time I pick it up, I am taken by how well it's made. The fit is excellent, the workmanship is top-notch. And the sound is unique to a solid mango instrument. I love the mat, satin finish on it. It's perfect for the mango. I think it sounds more open than the deluxe or Pro models with the gloss finish. The neck is satin as well, which lets your fretting hand glide along its length without sticking if it gets a little sweaty.
I had low-g strings on it, but I didn't like the sound. (I hate wound strings.) It just didn't seem to work with the wood. (Low-g is great on my Acacia Tenor Pono.) So I put Worth Brown High-G strings on it and it sounds really nice. But I think I'll put Living Water High-g Fluorocarbon strings on it to improve the clarity of each string.
Be aware: Most mango instruments have "spalting" in the wood—a dark blotching or graining in the mango wood. Being the base model, it's more likely to be present. Mine is all on the back which I don't care about. While the front and sides are a very pretty yellowish grained color. (I've gotten many compliments about how nice it looks.) Some of the fret boards can be kind of streaky as well. So carefully check the pictures to see if you like the wood on all of the sides. And make sure the seller does a setup on the nut and saddle to suit your playing style.
I love this tenor ukulele. It sounds as nice as my other tenors that cost a whole lot more. You get a lot for your money with this model.

Vinyl Backing On the Strap. PU Ends. Poor Quality.
Strap I received has a terrible cheap vinyl backing on it. It gets sweaty and slippery when wearing it. Really cheapens the quality of an otherwise beautiful strap. PU ends. Not worth the $40.

Interesting Collection of the Original Kingston Trio(s)
1 of 1 found this helpful Contains some previously unreleased material. Live cuts as well as studio. Some are better than others.
Both Dave Guard and John Stewart years are represented, plus some cuts from Dave Guard and the Calypsonians and his Whiskeyhill Singers. And John Stewart and the Cumberland Three.
It's a good collection, but maybe not quite great. Well worth having.
I have all of the original Trio's main US releases. So this is a nice addition to my collection.
