Nairne's Muskhogean Journals : The 1708 Expedition to the Mississippi River...
    12 July 2016
    For the Serious Historian
Nairne's journal is a short but very relevant book on truly early British colonial America (circa 1700), and contacts with the Native Americans. It reveals keen facts about the southeastern Indians, particularly the Chickasaws of northeastern Mississippi. The very antiquated writing style of Nairne is a bit difficult to follow in places, but taken as a whole, it is most interesting. Anyone wishing to study the clash of Spain, England, and France in the New World should read Nairne's journal. Putting aside the biases and prejudices of the writer and his times, anthropologists, historians, and casual readers interested in Southeastern history can gain from a close examination of this book.

    About High Plains Drifter
High Plains Drifter is your classic shoot-'em-up Western. Every once in a while I get a hankering for some old movie. He probably never truly existed in real life (who cares), but the fearless and ruggedly independent type who wielded his own type of swift justice and authority in a six-shooter has his appeal. I viewed my VHS purchase a couple of days after it arrived. I had seen this movie a couple of times previously - like 10-12 years ago. The product itself was brand new; still in the plastic wrapper. Top quality. I definitely got my money's worth. The movie itself is about 2 and a half stars - depends upon what your taste is. I think that Eastwood's later western movies such as The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider and the Unforgiven are better quality in plot and performances. David Smith Somerville, TN
    Copperhead (2014) - Used - Dvd

    Slow, but Historical
I found this movie slow for an American viewer like me. I kept waiting for something - some kind of something - to really happen! It held my interest only because of the historical aspects of it. The backdrops of hardscrabble upstate NY living and the crude technologies of the day (like a water-powered sawmill), made it more interesting. For one not interested in the real primitive living of the mid-1800s, this might not hold interest. I thought the props were worth viewing (especially the big draft horses). But the movie is supposed to have human drama. Though neighborhood tension were supposed to be high, i.e. Copperheads (Northern Democrats) vs. Lincolnites, it never boiled over until the very end. The conclusion is a painful tragedy, and very moving, but it takes forever to get there.
