3x Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials Trilogy Amber Spyglass Subtle Knife Golden

Thought-provoking reading for all ages
It's funny how many books with weighty themes are labeled as "young reader". Pullman joins the likes of Madeleine L'Engle and Gary Paulsen and Allan W. Eckert, taking on an examination of good vs. evil. THE GOLDEN COMPASS was made into a movie in 2007, and I've heard there were plans for THE SUBTLE KNIFE and THE GOLDEN SPYGLASS as well... until the Church intervened. At any rate, I find Pullman's writing to be thought-provoking, entertaining, and an interesting twist, especially in our current chaotic times.

On A Par With Murder
Good fictional characters and mystery plot-line, inter-woven with real life events at the 1995 US Open. Book contains a great deal of golf history wrapped around the twists and turns of the tale. Excellent course descriptions and well-written passages on the skills and pressures of the game of golf are well-blended with the politics of the modern game: greedy agents, elusive endorsements, spineless sponsers, and the endless quest for less shots and more dollars. Not Hemmingway, but a nice, easy read.

Missing Links
I'm buying this for a friend-- already have my own dog-eared copy. If you know the traditions of golf-- and respect them, then this book is about the anti-traditions of golf. Its the melting-pot of golf, exploring the fun and the possibilities of the game... maybe through the eyes of characters who escaped from Danvers hospital, up the road a bit. Great characters, twisted plot... or maybe twisted characters, great plot. The story upsets the apple-cart of the game and wades through the apple-sauce of what it might be. Rick Reilly is the new Dan Jenkins; and if you don't laugh as you read this book, you're probably dead.
