Shiloh
I have visited Shiloh many times and author Shelby Foote can make the trees bud out. The camp fires of the solders cooking, you can almost smell the bacon in the frying pans. Taking the story from the individual point of view is like placing you in the battle and bring the events more to life. I have always enjoyed Shelby Foote he brings to life the individuals in the battle and provides the reader with facts that are real and can be related to the battle ground today. The South never smiled after the Battle at Shiloh, thet lost one of the most beloved Generals. When Johnston died the next day General Beauregard was to finish the battle and achieve a great victory. That did not happen, he called a retreat and left the field. He retreated to Corinth, Mississippi in defeat and it became an up hill battle from that time until the end of the war.
A few great solders came from that battle. General U.S. Grant accepted the surrender of General Robert E. Lee CSA. General Sherman who defeated General Bragg and destroyed the southern states. General Nathan Bedford Forrest CSA the most feared General in the Civil War. He killed 29 solders in hand to hand combat and had 30 horses shot from under him. General Sherman said "If it took 10,000 lives and bankrupt the Treasury it would be worth it to kill General Forrest". Fred B. Thompson II
