Did the job
There's some story in there why Whirlpool uses this new thermistor replacement part number. Like maybe the old ones were crap and they don't care that they don't last maybe ? Entry to the Journal of Applied House Maintenance. So our 4 year old sears whirlpool fridge starts frosting up, check the internet to see whats up. Its a huge problem for many models, there's no real info supporting these appliances anymore, its an $85 diagnostic minimum, zero info on how to force a manual defrost cycle. Checking the situation, it does defrost a bit since the heater wire is clear of ice, that means the heater and the computer are at least somewhat alive. Over half the web advice is - install a new computer $300 US. There's a thermistor the computer uses to somehow check if its iced up, its not expensive, but they never really fail - or do they? Looking up the part number - woah, there's a newer replacement thermistor, thats a clue, and may be the cheapest thing that's fixable. Call Sears - its $85, call Ottawa appliance parts, $60 best price - its stock. EBAY its $11 plus $12 express shipping, so it arrives a week later. Take out the old thermistor, compare with new resistor at room temp -uhho both indicate about 2.3 KOhms, not looking good here. Dip both in a glass of ice water, old one shows 2.3K, new one shows 5.4K. The old one is not thermistroring! Install it - will be a few weeks to see if it frosts up, but I'll be surprised. So if I'm right there's a lot of these crappy thermistors out there, and the vendors are quite happy to have us all make the service calls. Its easy to test a thermistor - check yours first if you have similar situ? (Still frost free)
