Good product
I purchased this unit to track my routes on a recent motorcycle trip. With the ability to load the data into programs such as google earth, i was able to visually see all the area i had travelled. the memory was quite large for recording my individual tracks,on average about 200 miles before the memory was nearly full. then i would save the track and start over again. i had not even used all of the memory available for the 10 track logs that could be saved. the interface took a little to get used to, but after playing with the unit i only read the book to see if there was anything i missed, that easy to use. i have yet to try any of the mapsource software and i am looking forward to it. i would like the ability to program coordinates into it before a trip and i am hoping the mapsource software will do that. the only real drawback is the data cable that comes with the unit. it is a serial cable, and you would need to purchase an additional adapter cable to convert to usb if your computer is of the newer variaty that does not have a serial port. double check the website before purchasing the adapter cable tho. some cable manufactures do not have compatable software for serial to usb adapter. one of the things i found as an unexpected plus was the way the memory saves your data. when the batteries do go dead, you do not lose any of your saved data. although i will be purchasing the power adapter for automobiles tho worth the cost in the long run. if you can find one here on ebay for a decent price it is worth it. i shopped around for about a month, found a product, researched them on the manufactures website, read reviews, and shopped more. this unit did exactly what i needed it to do, and i had gotten a great deal on it.

All in one
Like many I've tried various pieces of equipment looking to get a sound I like. Ok, add a few pedals and great, got the sound. Now I need a drummer... Okay start shopping for a drum machine.. Now we're up to a few pedals and a drum machine, cool! Oh wait, that piece really sounded good, i want to record that... start shopping for a 4 track and a mix down deck... Did i mention buying a spaghetti mess of cables? Now to run it into the computer to create the mp3.. oops, need software... You can try and run all of this thru your typical guitar amp, but be prepared for the headache.. Not to mention this setup isn't even close to portable, let alone feasible for doing a solo show. So after much deliberation (and some serious reviewing online) I purchased the GNX4. I was impressed with what i had read (and also seen on youtube) so I thought this is the answer to the prior headache. It is. Pre-reading the instructions was a bit intimidating without physically seeing the unit. There are so many features! The biggest selling point for me was something I could not find on another device. Effect control in each patch! What i mean is this; for those who use a lot of pedals your used to being able to turn each one on and off depending on mood and song. You had complete control over which effect you wanted on and when. Well along came digital age and we got multi-units that gave us every combination imaginable, all located in banks and patches. So...select a bank, then a patch and viola! There is your sound, but wait, what if the delay level wasnt sounding just right? Crap, hey guys, stop the band a sec, I have to reprogram a patch. Or copy the patch, then edit so you could switch between 2 (or more) patches in the course of a song. Ok, start playing again. This was a frustrating expierence I had on several "multi" (roland, art)units, all of which had turned me away from them and back to individual pedals again. So when i saw that this unit allowed me to turn off an effect, via the footswitch just like a regular pedal, my interest was peaked. Then there was the drums, cool, and realistic. Okay, now I have an 8 track recorder that lets me dub on the fly? Wow. Then I can route my signal to how many places, all in stereo? Goose bumps. Plus headphone out, seperate mic in along with line ins. This package is powerful. And the last thing i havent played with yet, USB. That's right, direct into my computer for burning up some mp3s. The manual is pretty well written and it will take some time to harness the full potential of this. Within 30 minutes i had laid down a drum track and layered 5 guitar lines(just for fun, still had tracks to spare!) I was disappointed to learn that digitech has discontinued this unit, but i think i figured out why. Given all the features of this thing I'm sure the competing companies had the digitech engineers dissappear like Jimmy Hoffa! Everything is in this thing, and its pretty rugged. I also got the optional footswitch, which makes recording a breeze. Now if I can figure out the settings so it will brew my coffee too...
