May be the Best Mechanical Device for Overall Dental Health after the Toothbrush
1 of 1 found this helpful Many years ago my Dad, who had excellent teeth, came home with the announcement that he would soon be having serious gum surgery, necessitated by periodontal disease. After that painful experience he always lectured me on the need to pay attention to healthy gums as well as teeth.
One of the problems with regular and mechanical toothbrushes is that they can't affect the gap between the tooth and the gum, and these can grow over the years to be deep enough to trap all kinds of food particles. Used regularly, Water Pik makes short work of trapped matter, while gently purging the gaps with oxygenated water and stimulating blood circulation. These effects are instrumental in preventing growth of the gaps, accumulation of tartar and food particles, and resultant bleeding gums. Ask a dentist if you don't believe me.
Though I brush religiously twice a day, I also use my Water Pik about twice a week for 3-4 minutes. My last unit worked fine for a decade or more. The new one is just as effective but a lot quieter.
Tip #1: If desired you can make an 80/20 water/antiseptic mouthwash mix in the tank for extra effectiveness, and I do that about once a month. (Whenever I use the mix, I purge the unit with a little fresh water after use.)
Tip #2: Always suck the last of the water out of the unit before putting it away to reduce risk of stuff growing in the plumbing between uses. The unit has multiple nozzles provided, so several family members can use it without an "ick factor."
Tip #3 For convenience I leave my unit fully assembled (with the tank in top) on the bathroom counter. To keep it clean, I cover the tank with a loose plastic bonnet used for covering food in the refrigerator.

Easy Installation in Acura TSX
After being charged $35 a few years ago for a cabin air filter replacement at a tire store, I decided last month to purchase a replacement filter on my own and install it myself. After referring carefully to the Owner's Manual, I fount the replacement process to be straightforward, and the replacement filter fitted perfectly in place. Most of the procedure involved no tools, though a screwdriver was helpful in doing some gentle prying. The new filter was well constructed and at least as substantial as the one it replaced.
Tip: Be sure and note the air flow direction and ensure that the new filter is placed right side up. It's marked with an arrow. If you haven't replaced your cabin filter for the better part of a decade, you'll likely find, as I did, that the filter is somewhat dusty and has collected a small amount of trash. That will confirm for you that it's time to make this small investment in time and money. If you park your car outdoors, replacement may be needed much more often. (By the way, I'm certain my wife could have done this in 30 minutes or less, and she's not terribly "handy.")
Saving over $25 or more for my 20 minutes of effort seems a good bet to me, and that's assuming the retail charge for doing this replacement hasn't increased in the last 7 years. The old filter lacked the carbonization, but I can't judge the significance of this feature in the new one. It works fine, and I'm pleased I gave it a try...

Perfect Cure for Fuzzy TV Audio
My wife and I have been watching more British TV and DVDs lately, and while the quality of their productions is typically really good (Foyles' War or Doc Martin, for example) British audio may leave a little to be desired. Coupled with the problematic accents and the typical poor quality of the sound systems in even modern HDTVs, we found ourselves more and more often turning to each other and saying, "WHAT did she say?" Even replaying a DVD two or three times wouldn't always be enough to allow a Yank to decipher the audio.
This item supports mono or stereo sound and gives it a level of clarity that reduces our frustration factor by about 2/3, and music quality is enhanced even more. We bought the system used but if was precisely as described, easy to configure and install, and has worked perfectly for several weeks. This is a quality component, it sits unobtrusively beneath the TV's base, and really improves our viewing and listening experience. An unexpected feature is the clearly lighted display which illuminates from the black grid on the front when the controller is used, but then disappears after a few moments so as not to distract from the TC display.
Costwise, it was about 60% less than new, more complex systems, but since we were not attempting to do "surround sound" this system did everything we needed for an affordable price. We are delighted.
