Oh Boy! Quantum Leap Season 4 Review
2 of 3 found this helpful There can't be many people, sci fi fans or not who don't know of this series. The premise is simple, scientist Dr Sam Beckett bounces thorugh time, each week inhsbiting the body of a person whose life has gone off the rails and nees help finding their way. Sam is unable to leave (or leap) from that persons life until "he has put right what once went wrong". Unable to return home, he is guided by his best friend, Al, a retired Navy Admiral, who is broadcast to Sam in the form of a holographic projection that only he can see.
As an avid fan of the series from its original BBC 2 run in the early 90's I was thrilled when the series began to appear on DVD, the producers previously stating that it would be too expensive to release the whole series due to royalty and music rights on the various songs used thorugh out its run.
The series stands up well on viewing, almost 14 years after it was cancelled. Sure, some the storylines are hokey and the fact that all episodes have happy endings (the series premise after all) gives it that sugary sweet American tv feel. but the characters of Sam (a pre enterpise Scott Bakula) and Al (Dean Stockwell, most recently seen as Brother Cavell in the new attlestar Galactica) as marvellous creations by producer Don Belisario - so much so you care about their fate. The two actors play off each other marvelously, the brother like relaitonship of the two perhaps being the shows strongest part.
The lack of extras of the Region 2 release is disappointing, a shortr featuretter and a episode from the fifth and final season, that a fan would most probably have anyway.
Despite this I can highly recommend this DVD. Buy it, close the curtains and remenise about what ever decade Sam happens into.
