Disappointing for the pro, illuminating for the amateur
I'm speaking as someone who has been researching through books and through documentaries the Nazi era and Hitler in particular. I bought it because I wanted to see the steps that led Germans to choose Hitler and his party. That being said, this film does not come up to the same level as "Mein Kampf" (which comes from the early Sixties) or "The Hidden Fuhrer" or even the series, "The Nazis." The director clearly meant to create a kind of film collage of the rise of Hitler, with hardly any intervening, running commentary consisting of new knowledge about Hitler's rise, except for subtitles. In some ways, it is a product of its time, coming from the early Seventies, but it doesn't work for me at all in 2012. Images are not enough. Unfortunately, it has the disjointed feel of a light show. Plus, there were many scenes that I had already viewed in other documentaries. I know that some Nazi and Hitler documentaries can be repetitive with footage from this time, because it is the only stuff that is extant and safe and in the public domain. I wanted to see more and newer material. It's best for buyers to pick up documentaries coming from the 1990s to the present that has something to impart.

    Philips DVP3040 DVD Player
I was looking for an inexpensive Philips DVD unit simply because I had had good luck with them. I have a few British or Australian-made DVDs, and I was able to easily unlock the unit to make it a multi-region or Region 0 player. The only problem I have is that there isn't a button to open the player as well as close it. Also, it has a tendency, at least with one dvd, to stop in the middle with no explanation. I figure that I may have to clean the dvd as well as the player and start again. Otherwise, I am pretty satisfied with this player; I plan to get another dvd player, hopefully with a vcr, and call it a day.
