H.R. Giger’s Baphomet Tarot by Akron - The Quintessential Deck for Shadow Work

In 1992 Swiss occultist Akron held a private showing of a collection of 22 previously unreleased HR Giger art pieces at the Giger Bar in Chur and the Baviera Gallery in Zurich.
These pieces were hand picked by Giger and Akron to be assigned to the 22 major arcana of the Tarot. As it turned out, Akron was just the esoteric scholar to write the book to accompany what would become known as the Baphomet Tarot and or the “Tarot of the Underworld”.
Arguably, one of the most controversial Tarot decks of the modern era; Giger’s art pushes all boundaries of anything ever seen in traditional Tarot imagery.
Akron’s goal and primary area of interest of esoteric study was shadow work and he incorporates that knowledge rather seamlessly in the guidebook accompanying the deck.
Akron views Baphomet not as some horned demon idol of evil but more so as the perfect symbol of alchemical union and magickal balance.
I was fortunate enough to come by an English language, first edition of the deck known as the “Silver Slice” for its illustrious silver gilded edges and I must say the deck certainly lives up to the hype.
The 25 cards included are huge, sturdy and extremely silky and smooth to the touch. For a nearly thirty year old deck, they seem to have held up remarkably well; with the silver gilded edges perfectly in tact with no sign of flaking.
In this first edition set, the included pocket sized book by Akron is chock full of unusual and welcome information not traditionally found in other Tarot deck booklets.
A whopping 82 pages of information on just Baphomet, Alchemy and Shadow Work preface the actual meanings of the cards and the booklet contains many unique spreads as well.
The deck has been re-released multiple times, most notably a subsequent limited re-release in 1995 included an original album created exclusively for the Baphomet Tarot by Epilepsy ; making this deck the only Tarot deck in history to have an original soundtrack.

Very few authors understand the deeper meaning and purpose of the Tarot as Akron demonstrates in his writings and the visceral and often inappropriate, yet thought provoking imagery created by Giger is so overwhelmingly powerful and potent - the alchemical marriage of the two makes any version of this deck a must have for any serious Tarot and or esoteric enthusiast that isn’t easily offended.
