A Timeless TV Western
Branded first aired in January 1965, while I was a young cavalryman myself. All of 7 years old and bounding throughout the neighborhood with my MARX US Cavalry sidearms and saber while rinding my bannana seated Sears bicycle (er,ah horse). My friends and I recreated many of the episodes found in this Season One. Chuck Connors, former pro baseball player and TV icon best known for his role in The Rifleman portrays Jason McCord, a former Captain in the US Cavalry. McCord is the lone survivor of the Battle of Bitter Creek, where his fellow troopers and commanding officer are massacred by the Apache Indians. The army judged him to be a deserter, stripped him of rank and sent him in disgrace into the world. McCord roams the West in search of redemption and justice for others, many of whom know of the widly publicised battle and court martial of the former Captain Jason McCord. Series One begins in black & white film footage, like the originals and will end in colorized episodes. TV and Entertainment stars like Peter Graves, Claude Akins, John Carradine, Cesar Romero, Bruce Dern and many more grace these well preserved weekly shows. If you like Western action or always root for the guy with the odds against him, you will love this series. Bonus features are: The Rifleman "Day of the Hunter" episode + Four Star Playhouse: "Vote of Confidence" with Chuck Connors + Chuck Connors' Biography. Enjoy, this is all great DVD viewing.

Confessions of "Crazy Cooter"
Subtitled The Confessions of "Crazy Cooter" is at best, an understatement. Here we have a fully exposed Cooter, excuse the pun but I can not say it any clearer. Ben Jones tells his story, raised on the smell of sea air in a railroad shack in Portsmouth, VA. He is a hard working lad that loved to play baseball and imagine himself as an all star player. Son of a weekend drinker and a likeable, loveable saint-like mother, Ben steps into the dog crap of life that was issued to him like a cheap pair of GI trousers. Put 'em on, pull 'em up and shut up! No, not Buster Jones, he won't take crap. Like papa before him he takes a shine to the liquor and it takes a shine to him for many, many years. Through his early jobs, education and relationships Ben is on a crusade to drink as often as he can. Naturally this leads him into the bars, beatnik joints and jails. Have I painted a picture of a man with a big thirsty monster demon? Hold that thought for a moment because there is another Ben "Buster" Jones that emerges in this biography. Ben is sensitive to those around him, there is not a lick of hatred in his soul or actions. In fact when you read this book you will find many surprises that may bring a tear to your eyes, you will celebrate the human race once again. We have long been exposed to a likeable TV personality, no doubt many Dukes of Hazzard fans will want to read this book for that alone. Perhaps you were a fellow student, neighbor, politician or constituent of his back in the day, even presently. Mr. Jones found something that perhaps we all need to find, and that is ourselves. With the grace and responding assistance of a greater being, the creator if you will; Ben traded in those GI trousers and took life by the horns and cleaned his act up. This book is loaded with down-home humor from the docks of Virginia to the Capital steps in Washington, DC. You will even find Cooter overseas. Unlike some other books currently on the shelves by self serving political do-nothings and lifeless, shallow Hollywood figurines, we find a human being telling his story, your story and my story. There is nothing crazy about Cooter anymore but there was, yet I won't tell you more here in this review. However, I trust that you will find a man that is no greater than you, no less than you and grateful to have survived his past filled with errors, successes, failures and achievements. Ben Jones puts all of his cards on the table in this book and I congratulate him on a well written, structured and inviting literary contribution.

An eye opener for young readers - adults will enjoy the brief book as well
A perfect Civil War themed book for the young reader. If your student is interested in Gettysburg or the Gettysburg Address, then a double bonus. My own children are familiar with Evergreen Cemetery where the story takes place, yet it removes the mundane physical characteristics of the cemetery now and the reader can go back to when it came alive through the lives of a very loving, caring and thoughtful caretaker family. The sacrifices of this family are unimaginable to the present generation and the book becomes a mild and entertaining eye opener. Adults will also appreciate this book.
