Highly recommended for Deep Purple fanatics
If all you know about Deep Purple is "Smoke on the Water", stop right here: this album is not for you! Because Stormbringer is not more of the Smoke on the Water style, it’s a rather major departure from it. It features less of the heavy riff based style Deep Purple is known for and more of a melodic, soulful, rhythmic approach to songwriting and arrangement. This album is a unique opportunity for Purple fans and rock enthusiasts to hear the work of five young creative individuals who know no fear and are at the height of their capabilities. Stormbringer was recorded in 1974 during a very turbulent time in the band's history, and while building on the success of their previous album Burn, it is mostly a product of the growing influence of two new band members: the soulful singer/bassist Glenn Hughes and the phenomenal vocalist David Coverdale, later frontman of Whitesnake (for more Purple joy see Whitesnake’s recent release “The Purple Album”). Stormbringer is also a time of declining internal influence of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who around that time grew unhappy with Deep Purple and soon after Stormbringer left the band to form another remarkable band, Rainbow. This edition of Stormbringer consists of newly remastered original mixes of all songs, four tracks recently remixed by Glenn Hughes, one previously unreleased instrumental, and a second disc, a DVD audio, with the original quadraphonic mix formatted for contemporary surround sound, which I heard for the first time ever and it was quite an experience. Highly recommended for Purple fanatics like myself, for anyone else with interest in this material I would recommend listening to any copy of Stormbringer.
