A fun toy for 3D photography.
I chose this camera for its three 3D capabilities. It isn't as good a camera as the Lumix DMC-3D1; it lacks must haves like image stabilization, and as a camera the 3D1 is just plain better. However the Lumix didn't have a 3D display; a major draw back for a 3D Camera. Also the Cameras are further apart on the W1; not always and advantage but better for taking photos of things further away (e.g. ducks). Since I have a 3D mobile phone with close cameras, the W1 complements my phone. The Lumix still isn't a decent camera. It is crippled by a lacks basic features such as a manual controls and ability to disable pre-flash; vital features that even my old $60 point and click had. The Lumix cost ~$200 and wasn't a clear winner. I could pick up a W1 second hand for ~$100. I also considered the W3, but apparently they had taken out the usb connector; it also cost more without being a clear winner. So I chose the W1. When the camera first arrived it felt solid; nice though it also means more weight. The included usb cable doesn't seem to charge the camera, this means I have to lug the AC charger round the world (yet more weight). The image quality isn't the best and it is heavy. OTOH a serious lens for a DSLR costs over $300, and there are basically no 3D cameras that aren't intentionally crippled. As a 3D camera with a 3D display, it is a fun toy for ~$100 (secondhand).
