A Bravura Debut Album
This is the stunning debut album from Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti, recorded, I think, shortly after she had given a triumphant live performance of Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto with Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Symphony: it was the piece with which she signaled why she had won the BBC Young Musician of the Year award for 2004. A prodigy trained at the Yehudi Menuhin Academy, Benedetti chose no ordinary display piece, but one of the great modern masterpieces of the violin repertoire. The work, blending high-shimmering sounds on the E string with splintered-crystal dissonances and double stops, calls for lyricism, technique, and sinew; Benedetti rises to each of the challenges.
The listener almost has to recover from the emotional tensions of the Szymanowski. But the other pieces on the album illustrate other remarkable facets of this young (but "old-souled") talent, who has recently commissioned and recorded violin-and-orchestra works by Wynton Marsalis.
