Entertaining series.
A highly entertaining comic drama, which is well-judged by the director in all ways. It's not 'over-the-top.' Jack Whitehall makes an ideal Paul Pennyfeather. This 3-part series is much more respectful of Waugh's novel than the 1968 film adaptation that was oddly titled 'Decline and Fall...of a Birdwatcher.'

Director's cut is the one to see.
54 : the director's cut is a much finer film than the version given theatrical release. The differences are major, the theatrical release being a lightweight effort with limited appeal for audiences and critics, the director's cut offering a satisfying dramatic experience. I'm guessing the theatrical one reflected apprehension about unhappy endings, which is curious given downbeat box office successes like 'Midnight Cowboy' and 'Leaving Las Vegas'. Characterizations and photography in the director's cut are also much more engaging than in the other. With 30 mins. cut from the theatrical one, and 44 mins. restored to this version, the director's cut is definitely the one to see.
