Late to the alternative-to-IPod party
1 of 1 found this helpful Have almost 3000 songs encoded in Ogg Vorbis and was unaware that I-Pods won't play these until recently (and was unwilling to chase the Rockbox approach).
Not much in the way of cheap options to an I-Pod 20GB (portable)storage mechanism but stumbled into learning about the desirable but discontinued Rio Karma. (Newer alternatives ARE available but I was trying to do this for under $100, and don't need/want to pay for video capabilities.)
My first Karma arrived yesterday and after getting it set up and loaded, find that it works well. Getting used to the menu and controls will take some time. Sound is MUCH better than what I heard from a Sansa 8GB player using some of my same Ogg tracks.
Only disappointment is the uneven levels ( a track RECORDED hotter than the previous one PLAYS louder.) My tracks were processed in WinAmp with Replay Gain so that they should all play at a relatively uniform volume level--and DO if playing straight out of the WinAmp audio library. But the Karma doesn't seem to recognize it, hence the "up & down" volume problems.
Other than that, I love it -- straightforward to load, and use. No forced reliance on I-Tunes...yay !!
