Great writing, with plausible situations and mysteries set in a realistic conception of space.
This was a short lived series on BBC2 back in 1987, with only nine episodes. I first saw it as a rebroadcast on an American PBS station in 1988 or '89, and was instantly hooked. The strength of this series was the writing, providing fully formed personalities, and intriguing mysteries. While the production values were typical BBC "good enough", the show could have used a bit more money in the zero gravity scenes. Still, they played it straight and I think did a very credible job of world building a near-future conception of what a real human presence in space would look like. Again, this was a 1987 production, so Americans viewing it will pick up the occasional BBC America Bashing from that era. But all things considered, it is relatively mild, and as an American viewing it in 2020, I have to say it caused me to chuckle a few times. It is really such a shame the series wasn't renewed for another 2 or 3 seasons, as it was dealing with real issues that might crop up once Mankind moves into space. I especially enjoyed the last episode "Little Green Men and Other Martians", which explores a scientific hoax, designed to spur further research into extraterrestrial life. A sort of "Piltdown Man" in space. The end of the episode set up a return for the show, but sadly, that didn't happen. Despite its shortcomings in the production department, I can heartily recommend this show to anyone who enjoys well imagined speculative fiction.
