Anatomy of the Ship: USS Iowa by Stefan Draminski (2020, Hardcover)
    13 August 2020
An appropriate title for this book.
This is an outstanding reference for battleship USS Iowa. For the naval historian or the ship model builder it has left no stone unturned as to the appearance of the ship during various stages of its existance. It will be my source for building a 1/350 scale model of her 1944 appearance as well as another in her 1980's appearance. I have only two criticism: 1: The United States Navy does not refer to the guns aboard its ships as "Artillery". This is an incorrect term that has slipped into recent naval publications, mostly from Polish sources such as this one. The USN has always refered to guns as "Gunnery". 2: The camouflage paint colors are innacurate and inconsistant for her 1944 camouflage. She was painted in Navy Blue 5n and Light Grey 5L in the dazzle scheme. Color renditions show her in Haze Grey 5H which in wartime was more bluish than grey and darker than 5L, and the cover artwork as well as one of two depictions of this scheme show her in a dark grey in lieu of the blue 5N. For a technical book which does a good job otherwise these are important points which need to be noted for the new reader of this book. Still a highly recommended book and a good value for anyone seriously interested in this ship.

Shield of the Republic : Michael T. Isenberg (Hard Cover, 1st Edition)
    27 June 2020
A very apt title since the US Navy is the historical and de facto Shield of the US, in spite of what the Air Force fanatics preach.
This book is a narrtive style history of the US Navy in the early Cold War era. While it has value by way of providing a timeline of the political and social activities of the Navy with some operational information, it is not based on primary sources or research. What is dissapointing is that the author, a professor at the US Naval Academy, had the necessary resources at hand-and his bibliography is extensive-he makes many, many errors in the way of text details. i.e., there was never a Phoenix class of light cruisers, the Alaska Class large cruisers were not poorly designed, and four, not three US Battleships took part in the Korean War. I knew the correct facts here before I reached teen age and here a professor makes the most elementary mistakes. What this does is to lower his main narritive credibility. He also has quotes with no footnotes and promotes ordredges up myths such as Admiral Halsey riding through Tokyo on a white horse. At any rate, i will retain this book in my library not as a reference but as a timeline. Norman Friedman wrote a very good Cold War history which is not naval-oriented as this one is but still covers the era in a more credible fashion.

    Appropriate title.
Pros include the format and content. The book is a primer of the Cold War which seems to be balanced overall in perspective. The book is broken down into subject chapters which condense the major issues and events of the period. The content is adequately detailed to describe these issues and events but is necessarily basic to make this format work in the size of the book. Dr. Friedman is a well-versed Cold War expert and has written many books on the subject, most of which I have read. This book is a good place to start studies of this important perios.
