A Band at the Peak of their Powers.
Really good live recordings of a band at the peak of their powers. A good mix of shorter material with 20-minute jams, in an electric atmosphere.

The Root Source of Power Pop
Big Star are reknowned as cult progenitors of power-pop, and every word of it is true. These records are better than Third/Sister Lovers which has ramshackle charm, but lacks the greatness of their earlier work. Buy it for the Teenage Fanclub fan in your life.
Townes Van Zandt : Drama Falls Like Teardrops (2CDs) (2000)

Good overview of Townes' career
Once a little-known cult songwriter, now a much better known cult songwriter (thanks in no small part to the tireless promotion of friends and fans like Steve Earle) this double CD gives an excellent overview of Townes' studio work, including essentially all his classic songs. To my ears, some of these are a little over-produced compared to the many live versions available, which better highlight his lyrical strengths. Still, for a new listener trying to find out what the fuss is about, highly recommended.
