Fantasy and reality mix
This book is the sequel in the Monster Blood Tattoo series. In both books you find a language of its own in which the reader must try to remember all the different meanings. There is a glossary printed at the end as well as a multitude of other helpful information and drawings. I particularly liked the story in this book because it shows the main character as having many issues as modern day teenagers such as growing up in a less than hospitable environment, dealing with unkind people and the trials that life brings even in a fantasy world. There is some gory bits because after all it is a world filled with monsters and violence. The first book is more about the journey of finally traveling outside into the world whereas the second book is more about learning who you really are. It does end in a cliff hanger so if you don't like books that leave you on the edge, I don't suggest it at least until the third one comes out. I read somewhere that it is meant to be a trilogy. The books also focus on one of the true factors into a person's life - what really is evil and what really is good? I recommend this book for anyone over the age of 13 who won't be frightened by the violence. The story is a little simplistic with the exception of the terms and you can predict what's going to happen most of the time but for younger readers I think they will enjoy it more and will be able to identify better with the main character, Rosamund (who's a boy with a girl's name).

Real life wonders and dissapointments
I really enjoyed this book. I had read an article about it in the USA Today which peaked my interest. It's a new release but the author is in his nineties. I enjoyed reading about his childhood in England. It's funny and sad at the same time and you actually feel like a young child in his wonders and disappointments. Bernstein's story helps us to remember how things were and still are and I think anyone who has endured hardship will be able to relate. I also recommend this book to anyone who enjoys period pieces of history and I am certainly looking forward to the next book.

Fun and interesting history
If you like architecture and history, you should enjoy this series. I liked that the stories are varied and have lots of interesting information. There are computer graphics to rebuild structures that have been or are being destroyed over time. I am looking forward to the next volume.
