Depressing but some exceptional acting
1 of 1 found this helpful I saw this movie several years ago and now remember few of the details. However two things remain clear to me about the movie. First of all whereas there were some "feel good moments" throughout the movie it is overall quite depressing. That should be expected because it was about the characters involvement with a depressing subject. So don't watch it when you feel depressed. The second thing I thought was special about the movie was the acting of Patty Duke especially at a climatic point in the story. This might have been this excellent actress's best performance. I'm going to watch it again. If you think you might like the movie then you probably will.

Exceptional Movie About Motherhood
Bette Midler is outstanding in her portrayal of Stella, a woman who knew what she knew and more importantly what she didn’t know about being a mother. In real life there are exceptional people who are poor parents and likewise people who are lacking in their personal lives who are exceptional parents. Stella was an unorthodox example of the latter group. In a poignant scene in which she and John Goodman were lying in bed with him “explaining” what marriage is all about Bette Midler, acting only with her eyes, clearly expressed what the whole movie was about. By recognizing her own shortcomings Stella was ultimately able to do what she had to do to give her daughter all she could give her and more. Whereas some may see some of what Stella did as a parent to be controversial, I contend she was a great mother. And whereas I tend to prefer Westerns and War Movies, this is one of the very best movies I have ever seen. If you like human interest stories and have any interest in parenting I strongly recommend that you watch it.
