Vintage Olympus Stylus Infinity Zoom 140 DLX 35mm Film Camera

Classic Olympus Compact 35mm
The tiny, elegant Olympus Stylus Infinity compact 35mm cameras are my favorites of the whole class. I've owned most models, from the original Stylus Infinity to the Zoom 160 and they have all been excellent. The Olympus clamshell design has been copied by almost everyone, but never surpassed.

Rave for FTb, All Metal Classic 35mm
Somehow I missed this beauty when I bought my first 35mm camera in 1975. It has been a revelation. Don't read this review if you like to hear about the trials and tribulations of shooting 45 year old cameras. The FTb has been an unmitigated pleasure. I feel fortunate to have found such an excellent example after all these years. Not an untouched "hanger queen", but a well-preserved, carefully used vintage camera. Very solid feeling, heavier than the A-series designs that followed. It has no automation, which is fine with me. I bought it wanting the vintage look and feel, with the intent of using it strictly for black and white film. In addition to the rugged, all-metal construction it has two highly desirable features missing from the models that followed: the very convenient QL (quick loading) system of film loading, and partial metering which uses only the central 12% of the frame. It is almost like having spot metering, which is very helpful with black and white films often having less exposure latitude than color-reversal negative films. The 50mm f/1.4 S.S.C. lens is also a classic, perfectly matched to the FTb. I bought the camera knowing that the lens alone was worth the purchase price. Like most Canon primes, it is sharp even wide open, a nice low-light combination. Looks are as good as performance. Canon always detailed their black models beautifully. Shooting this camera is like being transported to 1971, except it gets more notice now. If you want a classic film experience without the compromises of some vintage systems, the Canon FTb is an excellent choice, with great optics, large, viewfinder, solid handling, accurate metering, all in a great looking package. Now I would like to find an ever-ready case in comparable condition. Not easy, as old Canon cases are usually dried and cracked beyond use.
Nikon Coolpix S8100 12.1MP Full HD Digital Camera

Small camera, big value
An old design, I bought this one as a backup for my 10 year old S8100 that is showing its age. Great pocket camera for snapshots, Facebook, and Ebay. 10:1 zoom is plenty of telephoto, macro setting for great closeups, and plenty of resolution for online posting. Compact cameras cannot compete with SLRs for ultimate image quality but neither can most monitors display really high resolution. Great depth of field for product shots. I sell and trade vintage cameras, the S8100 is perfect. Also has usable 720p video that my grandsons enjoy. Surprisingly tough for a pocket camera, more rugged than the model that replaced it. I've taken more than 25,000 shots with mine and it still works as it always did.
