About

Hi there! I am a jazz musician and artist. I am into WWI airplanes, early US railroads, and other interests like WWII US naval aircraft and various attack aircraft, not to mention some ships and armor. Oops, wasn't going to mention them. Sorry. ;^)

Albatros Aces of WWI (part 2)--a fine effort!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author is well known in the WWI aviation community for his work on German color schemes, and it seems he is a good author as well. While the text of this series can be dry and repetitive, the author keeps things interesting by way of his thorough research into the pilots, as well as their aeroplane. I especially liked the book since it dwelled mostly on the lesser known aces and mostly avoided the top aces of the German air service (which are adequately covered in Albatros Aces of WWI, part 1, also in the Osprey series). This is a fine addition to any WWI aviation buff's library, and the information contained is useful to scale modelers as well. I don't have any particular dislikes for the book. I do not agree with every color conclusion reached by the author, but this is not to detract from his work. It is tricky and speculative at best to interpret colors from black & white photographs, especially since many of the written records have been lost over the years. My only suggestion would be to tell whether the radiators of the D.III variants profiled were centrally mounted or offset to the right, but this information is available to those with very well stocked libraries. I would recommend this book to any WWI German aviation enthusiast or modeler without hesitation. I hope Mr van Wyngarden has other volumes in this series, as I would but them without hesitation. I "vote with my wallet", and Mr van Wyngarden has my "vote". Sincere thanks for work well done!

Sorry, honey, I screwed up. Here--maybe this well help.
Hi there! I'm afraid this will not be a very useful review of the product. Ya see, I'm cheap. I usually turn off the TV cable box overnight. The light and heat burn up electricity needlessly. Well, during TCM's "31 Days of Oscar" month, my wife set up Doctor Zhivago to record at some odd hour of the morning. It is one of her top fifteen favorite movies, as you know. Well, ol' Cheapo turned off the box and the movie didn't record. When my wife found out, she was disappointed but not upset. No big deal. Well, I felt bad about it and looked it up on ebay. So, after a quick and easy transaction, my wife has a copy of the movie she can watch any time she wants. I don't get the attraction myself. We watched it together once, and I think I slept through a patch in the middle. But she likes it, she has it, she is happy, and I look good for minimal effort. Don't you just love a happy ending?

THE superlative resource on the Andrews Raid (Great Locomotive Chase).
There are a few subjects that have fascinated me for as long as I can remember. The 1862 Andrews Raid, also known as The Great Locomotive Chase, is one such subject. Okay, the raid failed and the effect on the Civil War had the raid succeeded is debatable. There were other raids and skirmishes of a similar nature. But this one . . . what nerve! On both sides! I have read a ton of material on the Andrews raid over the years. This book is the top of the heap, period. The subject matter has been exhaustively researched and compiled in a very readable format. I truly had trouble putting the book down, so well is it written. I would recommend this book to my wife, who is not a hardcore history fan. The flow of the text is such that she would enjoy it and keep track of the various stories as they are discussed. I must say I have no real dislikes about the book. Perhaps it could have had some "new" photos--but there aren't any, so far as we know. So we must deal with what we have. Mr Bonds did a true service to the subject matter. Having written an award winning history term paper in college, I can appreciate the depth of his research and his presentation. If you have an interest in the Andrews Raid, the American Civil War [the Wah of Nawthun Aggreshun], early railroad operations, or American military history, this book is a must-read. I cannot recommend it more highly. Mr Bonds has another book out, also dealing with the Civil War. I will likely buy and read it, even though its subject matter is outside my normal interests. His writing is that much of a pleasure to read.
