An essential addition to the study of Scorsese's filmmaking.
A beautiful and comprehensive exploration of a seminal 70's Scorsese film, the one which put himself, DeNiro, Keitel, and Jodie Foster into the realm of giants (and don't forget Peter Boyle!). Lavishly illustrated on heavy, glossy pages, these on-set photos are as well composed and lit as any shots in the film itself. Schapiro obviously had total access, and it's a wonder this generous collection of photos and other materials languished unpublished for such a long time. Would that Scorsese allows publication of further books documenting in detail like this the making of some of his other masterpieces : "King of Comedy," "Mean Streets," "Goodfellas,"or even, how about "Hugo"? Let's hope Taschen, which has been so good to Stanley Kubrick's legacy, will continue this type of book in a continuing series.
