Black and white puppetry, for older kids!
I bought this item despite not remembering it when it was first shown on television, purely because of my liking for the later series of Gerry Anderson such as Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlett, and Joe 90 as a child. Firstly it must be said that I have never been a fan of Westerns or Musicals, and each and every 15-minute episode features the hero singing one of about 5 or 6 different songs, and begins with title music which seems to have little to do with the images on screen. That aside I found the idea of the story a good one - the hero is a sheriff who helps a young Native American boy, and is rewarded by the chief with four magic feathers. The feathers enable him to be able to talk to his faithful companions, a horse and a dog, and for his guns to fire on their own when he desires. A succession of regular 'baddies' are foiled by Sheriff Tex Tucker, ably abetted by his horse, his dog, and the friendly townsfolk. Worth owning if you remember the series, if only for the fact that until the release of the DVD this series had remained hidden for 40 years. Cannot be expected to hold the attention of the young target audience today (unless they are fascinated by the obvious puppet strings, like cheesy songs, or are addicted to black and white television), but may well appeal to those who watched it avidly the first time around, who would today be in their fities!

It's officially funny to be French (or German)
After series one and two, writers Perry and Croft may well have been forgiven for offering us scripts of inferior quality. Yet these next two series produced even better laughs than what had gone before. True the basic titilating humour is still very much in evidence, which provided a good grounding (can't go wrong with a bit of good old schoolboy humour!). Yet by now series three every character was well-defined, instantly recognisable by their individual catchphrase (or catchphrases). The contrived plotlines are both simplistic and complex, while the coincidences are so implausible that we are left in no doubt that this is British comedy. Furthermore, this is British comedy at its best. And despite the years it remains as entertaining and (almost) as amusing as the first time. A collection of British comedy must as surely include this gem as Fawlty Towers.

Never has there been a more real outlook on modern life
The first series of Grumpy Old Men, including the Christmas special. The series which at long last heard the truth as told by those the truly know what it is like to be alive today men aged 35 to 50. That they be seen as (and even admit to) being simply "grumpy" is in itself indicative of the world today. Seen by the rest as simply the inane ravings of Grumpy Old Men in the shape of, among others, Rick Wakeman, Rory McGrath, Bob Geldof, John Stapleton, the late John Peel, and the inimitable Arthur Smith, in fact what we are hearing is an insightful and intellectual overview on life in the 21st century. Narrated by the wonderfully ironic tones of Geoffrey Palmer, these men reveal their insight into subjects such as the mobile phone, speed bumps, Christmas, junk mail, fashion, teenagers, newspapers, politics, holidays, political correctness, and even television itself. Truly these men are visionaries, and if they ever decide to form a Grumpy Old Men Party, I would not only vote for them but would most likely offer myself up as a candidate! Buy it, watch it, (and maybe one day vote for them!)
