Not Applicable for Medical Transcription
TRICK OR TREAT! When I saw that Stedman's had a book devoted just to idioms and was authored by a CMT (certified medical transcriptionist), I was eager to buy this book. I am a medical transcription student, and I find learning "doctor-ease" a bit difficult. A lot of phrases doctors use are confusing, sentence- and grammar-wise. Some of what they say sounds strange and weird. "Patient had such and such illness or disease remote." HUH?! What on earth does that mean? (It's been a long time since the patient had that problem.) That was the kind of idioms I thought would be in a Stedman's book. After all, it seemed reasonable to me that a publisher known for medical word books would issue an idiom book specifically for medical phrases. So, I spent $29.36 on a 1/2-inch thick book that was, for all intents and purposes, wasted money. Some examples of the idioms from this book: *ahead of the game *flat as a pancake *from the bottom of one's heart *from start to finish *free-for-all *get one's act together *mark my words *off the top of one's head *out of the clear blue sky *pull some strings *set up shop *sleep on it *say uncle *scrape the bottom of the barrel *slip of the tongue *up the creek without a paddle If you are a native speaker of English from the United States, all of the idioms in this book are pretty well known. If you are a medical transcriptionists, student or professional, be aware that this book is not at all helpful. Save your money. Don't waste it like I did. However, there is a need for this type of book. For those who are learning English and are not native speakers of the language, this book is probably a blessing. It clearly explains all the peculiar idioms and sayings that we take for granted in everyday American life. Since I was duped into buying this book because a CMT authored it, I rated the book below average. This book has nothing to offer an MT unless, of course, that MT is not a native speaker of English or who is learning the language. If I were to rate this book for people who are learning English as a second language, I'd have to give it an excellent rating. For that purpose--and that purpose only--I highly recommend this book. Otherwise, save your money for other reference books. Mark my words!

This includes the dictations on the CD!
Marcy O. Diehl has outdone herself with this new edition of Medical Transcription Techniques and Procedures! Her wonderful 5th edition was worth (and is still worth) buying--I bought it myself. I was so impressed with the 5th edition that I vowed to buy the newest edition. I have found that this version is even better! This version contains 60 dictations on the disk that comes with the book--no added fees! Before you had to buy supplemental tapes to get the dictations. You can still buy the tapes if you desire, but there is no need to do so. The dictations can also be pulled off the CD and used with the Start/Stop program, Express Scribe, or any other player that can read mp3 files! You WON'T be disappointed with purchasing Diehl's new 2007 book. It's incredible!

Out of date and useless without accompanying tapes.
This is a very out-of-date text that absolutely needs the accompanying tape cassettes in order to have any value at all. Steer clear of out-of-date references and medical transcription "training" courses. In particular, steer clear of any medical transcription training courses that do not have the accompanying dictation. Personally, I did purchase this manual--only because I wanted to compare training materials from different courses. I did read the text to get more experience "reading" medical reports and have added a few words and phrases to my expander. If you are considering buying the text for that purpose, then perhaps it may be worth your money. However, considering the obsolescence of the material, the book by itself is maybe worth 99 cents or maybe even a couple of bucks, so don't go paying high prices for this text. I bought this while I was still a student. However, after much experience actually transcribing acute care for a hospital, I find that the text is very elementary and really of very little value. Bottom line: Don't waste your money. You can find other suitable training programs. Personally, I recommend any of the SUM training programs, either on tapes or on CDs. In particular, SUM's Basic Medical Transcription (BMT, pink disk) will give you enough knowledge and experience to be able to get a job transcribing for a local clinic. For acute care (hospital transcription with all report types and specialties), you will also need to complete and master SUM's Surgical Transcription Unit (STU) and SUM's Advanced Medical Transcription (AMT).
