The purpose of a ethernet splitter
1 of 1 found this helpful If you have only one long Ethernet cable but you want to connect two Ethernet devices to it you can use a Ethernet splitter but a splitter must be connected to each end of that cable. One end goes to two ports of a router and the other end goes to your two Ethernet devices. The resulting connections are limited to 100 MBit because each connection can only use 4 of the 8 wires in the cable. Connecting the cable to only one router port & two devices will result in packet collisions so it would not be useful.
