2001 Ford Crown Victoria X Colorado Highway Patrol Car
3 of 3 found this helpful Subject: This review is for a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria surplus from the Colorado Highway Patrol. I currently have 4 of the Crown Victorias, and three of them are from the Colorado Highway Patrol. I buy the used Crown Victorias for use by my family for personal use.
Purpose of Purchasing Crown Vics: The Crown Victorias are extremely cheap and get relatively good gas mileage. They are very reliable and the failures are known and easily repairable. When and if the engine or transmission goes out, I can sell the vehicle at almost the price I purchased it at. The highway patrol cars are preferred as the city cars have alot more wear and tear, especially on the front stearing and suspension system.
Saftey: The cars are extremely safe. I have teen age drivers, and the cars have been involved in several major accidents, with almost no damage to the Crown Victorias. I put trailer hitches on all the cars, and then a step bumper that fits into the receiver. Any rear end damage usually occurs to the step bumper, which is then replaced.
Replacement Parts: I purchase most of the replacement parts from the city auctions including tires, axles, etc. Part are easy to find in the junk yards, and are relatively inexpensive.
Work required to bring them up to personal use: Most of the Crown Victorias have holes in the trunk and passenger compartment. I strip out the flooring and remove all extra wiring, patch the holes with silicone, and install insullation to the floor. All the car fluids are changed out, and a complete tuneup is done including brakes and spark plugs. The spot lights are removed, and all the extra parts are sold on Ebay. There are usually a few replacement parts needed, so I take my list to the junk yard, and get all the replacement parts in one day. I also have the front end aligned and the tires balanced and rotated. Some minor painting, etc., is ususally required. The the car is ready to drive to 250,000 miles or more. The dark mode lighting is removed by disconnecting the battery and then disconnecting the blue connector under the glove compartment.
Why Colorado Auto Sales: The cars are always in good shape. They are silver instead of the standard white, or black and white. The highway patrol use minimizes the wear and tear, so the upkeep is minimized. A city car will require that the front stearing system be replaced, and the rear axle will have to be replaced. The rear axles are $250 each and replacement takes all day and is a major effort. Colorado Auto Sales staff are exceptional and are great to work with.
Cost of Ownership: The cost of ownership is extremely low, as the cars are cheap, there is no depreciation, parts are easy to find and cheap, and insurance is cheap. It is the lowest cost of ownership you can find. One note, you must be somewhat mechanically inclined as you will need to all the minor work yourself to make the cost of ownership extremely low.
