Arg!
Receiver data pin bounces high and low even when there is no TX, I tried software serial, virtual wire, and just baning high and low on tx bits. no mater what I do the receiver pin is not stable. with or without ant. I was using arduino Nano. I may try to filter power to see if that helps. Or just use a battery to power receiver.
