A legend among dinosaurs
The Leica R6 is one of the best mechanical SLRs ever made. It is ultra-simple, generally very reliable, smartly designed. It is very similar to the Leica M6 rangefinder in that there is the same shutter speed system (1/1000 to 1 sec), the accuracy of the meter (although the R6 has the advantage of providing a full-frame reading, or spot, as opposed to lone center-weight in M6), and the metering indicator in the viewfinder is quite similar to the M6 with two red arrows. The R6 also has a self-timer (absent in M6), and exposure compensation dial (also absent in M6). The big difference between the R6 and the M6 is the size. The bodies are exactly identical in length and width, but it's the lens which makes a huge difference. With the 35mm/f2 lens mounted on both cameras, the R6 with 35 summicron sticks out nearly 6cm further than the M6 with 35 summicron. And the R lens is twice as thick. If you're looking for compact portability, this is the big problem with SLRs. Unless Leica were to come out with a pancake lens (say 50mm and 35mm at f/2, similar in thickness to the Olympus 40mm pancake lens), but this will surely never happen. Leica has never made much money on the R cameras, at least not with the R6 and R6.2, which they lost money on. It is a shame because it would make the R6 absolutely perfect as a travel camera for serious amateurs and documentary photographers. If you can deal with the extra bulk, the R6 is a true gem, all the more so thanks to the Leica lenses which are unquestionably the best lenses in the world.
