The Lonely planet phrase book is very good.
Lonely planet phrasebooks never disappoint. The mandarin is very fluent and easily able to read and pronounce for a non native speaker. Lots of information and helpful words/phrases to use if a traveller were to ever visit a country who speaks mandarin. It would also be perfect for a child who was a native mandarin speaker to own to serve as a reference guide while going through education.
