SWORD OF THE SAMURAI: THE CLASSICAL ART OF JAPANESE SWORDSMANSHIP
03 September 2016
Don't buy this book to impress your sensei or dojo buddies
In the martial arts community, this textbook has a poor reputation for accuracy and originality, and its author is controversial. A quick Internet search for postings about it (or about the author) on martial arts forums is advised before considering buying a copy. While I can't recommend it to students of iaido, kendo, etc.,it may have some interest to researchers or journalists working on the history of the popularization of Japanese martial arts in the US, or to someone hunting a gag gift for a Japanese sword enthusiast. Some of the photos are amusing in their naive hamminess.

Olympus 720 Ultra Zoom--Lots of camera , small package
I first used a 720 UZ about 12 years ago to take geological site photos and sample photos and was immediately impressed with its quality and versatility, as well as its ruggedness (we beat the dickens out of them). The Olympus 720 UZ takes photos up to 1984 x 1488 (3 megapixel), has excellent optics, a wide zoom range, and takes good macro close ups as well. It also has a plentiful variety of user selectable options with regard to shutter, ISO film speed, white balance, aperture, and so forth as well as having a point-and-shoot auto setting. The viewfinder is electronic but has good resolution, shows several different kinds of setting info, and has target brackets for the autofocus and exposure sensor (oh, yes, it has AE lock). It takes 4 AA batteries, nothing weird. All that said, it has a few kinks I don't like. The lens isn't threaded for filters, so you're stuck with the lens cap for protection. All user controls are "fly-by-wire" and most go through a menu. There's no manual focus, it's all auto. It won't take SD memory cards. The original street price back in 2002 was in the $600 range. I got one on eBay recently as a backup to my DSLR for around forty bucks, and despite some wear, it still works like new. This type of camera is a bargain for shooting quality pictures for electronic publication, especially on the Internet, where max resolution is not usually an issue.

Cobra Patriot Pathfinder Arrow rest, C-371, New in pack

Arguably the best of its kind ever made
Made in USA, it's all metal, and all spacings, tensions, and orientations are adjustable. It requires more skill to use than a whisker biscuit, but it doesn't wear out, and no one will ever confuse it with a toilet brush bolted to your bow. Get them while you can, Cobra quit making them years ago.
