Poor audio quality but resplendent vocal performance
This is a recording of a live performance from La Scala in 1955. It is well known that the sound quality ia very poor; this is acknowledged on the sleeve of the disc itself. The only reason for buying it, apart from historical interest, is the voice of a thirty-one-year-old Maria Callas, which rises above the sonic inadequacies and the unremarkable performances of the orchestra and remainder of the cast. To Callas fans, her voice alone might justify the cost of the disc.

Polished performances
The tracks with other artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Santana and George Thorogood are worth the price. The quieter solo tracks are more for the 'purist', but they may grow on one over time.

A monument worthy of a treasured artist
This CD offers a comprehensive sweep through the all-too-brief career of one of the great singer-songwriters of the late 50s and early 60s. As well as the well-known numbers that have become standards - 'Cupid', for instance, which was given a unique rendition by Amy Winehouse - Cooke's lesser known gospel songs are included. All in all, this 80-minute disc is an excellent monument to a highly accomplished creator-performer.
