Works well with Linux. Sounds good.
I use a laptop stand from Logitech which makes the audio plug (which is on the front) inaccessible. I wanted to be able to listen to music (the laptop speakers are good for a laptop, but not up to music), so I found this AudioHub thing which works via USB. It isn't USB powered, has its own adapter. Plugged it into my Debian Linux rig and didn't have any trouble getting it working. The sound is really quite good for the size of the thing, no complaints there. It is big enough and heavy enough that you wouldn't really want to lug it around (but you don't really want speakers in a cafe anyway). If you are using a laptop as a desktop, this thing is gread. I don't know if there are any drawbacks to the fact that it uses USB instead of an audio plug. For me that was essential. It of course takes up a USB plug, but has three USB ports itself, for a net gain of two. I've seen it run $75 elsewhere. I wouldn't pay that for one, but for about $25 it was definitely an excellent buy.
