Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time [New CD] NTSC Format, UK - Import
11 May 2018
One of Hawkwind's Best
With the possible exception of "Hall of the Mountain Grill", this may be the best overall Hawkwind album. Throughout the 1970s they produced mostly good-to-great material; unfortunately, they quickly deteriorated by the 1980s. This one really stands out though. 'Assault and Battery/The Golden Void' is a mind-bender with an exquisite transition, 'Dying Seas' is just so damn peculiar and unique (and a personal favorite), 'The Demented Man' is absolutely haunting, and 'Kings of Speed' is relentlessly hard-charging. But it is 'Magnu' that is the real masterpiece. If only they had dispensed with those cheesy spoken-word segments!
As for the Steven Wilson remixes, he did an exceptional job here - perhaps one of his best efforts ever. 'Assault and Battery/The Golden Void' is really cleaned up and finally achieves its full potential. The instrumentals 'Opa-Loka' and 'Spiral Galaxy 28948' likewise benefit from his deft hand, while 'The Demented Man' seems largely unchanged. 'Magnu' is perhaps the one most different in the remix...I still can't decide if I prefer the original or new mix. In any case, both versions are incredible. For whatever reason, I actually do prefer the original mixes for 'Dying Seas' and 'Kings of Speed' even though the changes are very subtle.
Sadly, I do not have a Surround system, but the 3-disc (2 CD and 1 DVD) set is still well worth the cost, as both old & new mixes (as well as the flat transfer of original 1975 stereo master) are essential. Plus, there is a huge amount of extra material that is also top-shelf. No drawbacks that I can see here, and a definite must-have for any Hawkwind fan or even someone looking to explore their golden age (ca. 1970-1980).
