Russell Shorto's insight... the "Dead Sea Scrolls"and "early Christianity".
Russell Shorto's book reveals what was left behind in writing via the "Dead Sea Scrolls". Some of the writings come from the community aligned with Jesus and Jesus "older" brother James, devout Jews, who wished to expel the Romans from Judea. The "messiah" according to Jewish belief would lead the Jews in a revolt against their invaders and free 'Judea" from Roman control and create a "Jewish" nation (so to speak). The revolt occurred after Jesus death with James as the leader of the community of Jews who followed Jesus' teachings. The revolt would fail and lead to James' death, the virtual destruction of Jerusalem, of ancient Judaism and of the original form of Jesus "devout" teachings (later and somewhat loosely to become Christianity). The revelations from the scrolls are eye opening and based on written history. The exploration into this history helps give an idea of what early Christianity was along with delving into what would become "Rabbinical Judaism". The New Testament is exposed as a rewrite of history involving much creation and some revisitation of "Old Testament" events. The bend of "New Testament" writings is examined and illuminated here. There are other more involved books on the subject but this is a must read for all those who consider themselves Christian.
