becker z101 -great little unit, easy to get along with!
5 of 5 found this helpful I bought this as i already had a smaller becker sat nav, and fancied a slightly larger one. I was impressed with the previous model (becker 7934) with its total coverage of uk and europe, and even some parts of russia/turkey etc! the same maps are on the z 101. The z101 has a 4 inch screen and a little more colour than the previous model. nice thick driving lanes in 3D. it has the same voice i was already accustomed to, a polite middle aged lady, with even a 'please' every now and then. (noy quite 1950's BBC, but like say, a 'newscaster') we call her 'Doris Becker' (BorisBecker)
A lot of critisisms go to ALL makes of sat navs about time spent picking up a signal, and having heated front screens etc. (like my car) however, the becker (maybe others) have a little connector on the back to connect an aerial to. this is available on amazon for £10 and it graps a signal straight away. The z101 has a handy little bracket, that the TMC aerial and charger lead plug into, and a headphone lead too. so you can plumb it into a stereo, (if you know how) which can automute the radio volume, so you can enjoy music and have navigation overide the song, without missing stuff etc. Without this you cant turn your music up as you miss out on an important command. Also, the setup of the unit allows auto switching of the power, when mounting/connecting the unit to the mount. so as you turn on the ignition, it comes on, and off etc. -as you remove unit or the key. also, it comes straight on, unless you 'shut it down' previously, then it boots up etc. quite handy. All satnavs have their portability and connection requirements, and you have to fiddle about mounting it, and removing the screenmount etc for theft reasons, but its quite simple, either leave the mount on and click the unit on, or unclick, and remove the mount.
As for navigation, its very good, after learning to trust it, it regularly informs of upcoming turnings, showing 'greyed out' (wrong) turns in plenty of time, and the 'now turn left etc,' are very accurate. If you go wrong it finds a different route fast, or tells you to turn round. the handy ETA and remaining milage is 'always up' if you want it. you can set speeding limits to say 35mph and a 'warning' is spoken to warn you you could be up for a ticket, it all helps. as for the ease of use i find it very straightforward, but I know to the 'newbie' its all double-dutch, but trust this little unit to get you from home to the south of france, and back, via any points of interest etc you planned to see. as long as you set it up to say, avoid tolls, and fastest route, you are laughing. -and the lane info is very handy, also the next command distance arrow on the left of the screen, removes the journey 'blindness' as driving on the continent and over here, is a bit hair raising when you are unfamiliar. I trust it so much, i just tell it where, and do what she says, and i'm there! I know of no other 'nav, that packs the map coverage and features like this unit. (for the money), -and it has hidden secrets that are available (such as a handheld pocket pc), look on youtube, 'becker hack' etc. adding other programmmes is easy. even rival nav company maps! -the music and pictures thing is not needed, -hey you are driving for gods sake. full postcode input is easy, plus predictive road selection etc.
Oh, and becker is a German make, they make high quality stereos for cars and have been for years. mainly german vehicles. and they are well respected

rock steady, solid, useful. and trustworthy. unlike cheaper shorter 'pods, that slide down if you lean on them. useful legs, (though not tiltable)
excellent...easy to use, but a bit heavy to carry as a separate occasional item. i will find a tube bag with sling strap etc. Although the legs are useful, they rattle in the tube when carrying, but sorted with a little tape around them. if using with a chair, its like a tripod, and you can let go. but as a high monopod, (im 6ft 1in, and it goes to eye level with dslr) then, its not the most useful feature. (legs) but its thick profile, and rubberised top part, means its grippable. and not cold feeling... It has strong clamps, for confidence. and best for me, is the undo and 'drop down' action, not needed to shake/pull etc, not easy with a camera on top. only thing i would like is a little swivel 'three footed' base, which i might add one day. to stop it sinking in soft mud. i got a good deal, with a jessops ballhead on mine. (all for £50) but i would say i got a good deal on just the 'pod alone,at £50 ....its very strong. looks pro too. i use mine with a 'frotto 222 swivel head. which adds to the weight! and gives me another 6 inches, for standing on steep banks. (in crowds) 10/10
