Controllers broken

I thought I could push down on the cartridge to make it work Both controllers push up on the d pads when pressing right. I had trouble trying get threw the door at the start of super Mario brothers 2. I thought it was one controller that was bad so I tried to do the same thing and still did not work correctly. I have to buy working controllers
