Must read.
Thomas Hobbs was writing after the English monarchy had just survived a civil war and a Spanish invasion. He uses the title ‘Leviathan’, derived from Hebrew, to metaphor the naval power and destructiveness for the navy of newly formed empire. He formulates a compelling and rational argument which leads to the ideal of a ‘Social Contract’ between the people and it’s government; A contract in which he recommends revolution when the government fails to provide security an due care of those who it’s meant to represent. It all sounds obvious today, but he was the first to articulate these ideas in English, and many others in ‘Leviathan’ and he was the first to be published. Leviathan is not as important as Plato’s Republic to world politics, but he is essential to understanding why England still has a monarchy. Themes like ‘survival by confederacy’ and ‘ethical egoism’ being some of the major paradigms to his arguments. Be warned this book is written in old English. However, it’s not worth the effort discussing politics with someone who hasn’t read it and ‘The Republic’ and ‘The Parable of the Cave’ and... etc. So if you want to know who/what the leviathan is at the other end of the strings that move you every day, more intimately, this is the place to start.
