War and its terrible consequences
The story is very evocative of the time in WW1 when so many of the youth were lost. Having read Vera Brittain’s Great tome, I was not disappointed to see it come off the page. Thank you for the opportunity to revisit the landscape of the lost and fallen.

Excellent portrayal 60s crime genre
Very dark and of the early 60s crime and dismal genre.
The entertainment factor is hampered by fear of poking one’s toe in the murk of the whole darkness/Catholicism Graham Greene almost Thomas Hardy dragging down of the spirit.
The one character, Rose is very Pollyanna but the end of the film leaves you wondering if it was denial or mental inability to be rational.
Helen Mirren is her usual Agrade acting self. Several other underworld characters with duality of purpose provide interest.
It is not a put your feet up. Milk and cookies film it is a Grahame Greene fades to black .

The Cha Cam
Edward Fox is charming and not dour, as he is in The Dresser. The story and characters are authentic to the time and narrative. His decision to turn left is apposite for his character.
It is not so convoluted that it is too hard to follow.
Great entertainment!
