The Last of the Cowboys
Only found on VHS. Like the movie ending itself, it seems the Hollywood business deems this one should be put down like an injured horse. But I disagree. If you can overlook the stiff over-acting of Walter Matthau, this is a nugget of gold that Criterion should pick up. The story was re-written by Dalton Trumbo (of Johnny Got His Gun fame), one of the Hollywood Eight blacklisted in the Joe McCarthy era, with an anti-establishment theme. Kirk Douglas brings to life one of the few remaining cowboys, his world growing smaller from well-travelled asphalt and encroaching barbed wire fences. Filmed black & white. A sleeper worth examining.
